Italian Sandwich Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Packed with flavor and easy to customize, this Italian Sandwich Recipe is made with a combination of Italian cured meats, sliced pepperoncini peppers and the BEST creamy dressing. You'll want to make this sandwich over and over again!

This sandwich checks all the boxes: it's salty, tangy, creamy, and full of texture. A traditional Italian Sub Sandwich layers several types of cured meats, cheese, and crunchy toppings onto a soft roll. But what sets this homemade and from scratch version apart is the dressing-bold, zesty, and completely crave-worthy.

My Latest Videos

I used to be a simple sandwich girl-give me turkey and Swiss and I'd be happy. But this Italian Sandwich has converted me! I seriously cannot stop making it. From the first bite to the last, it's AMAZING. The creamy dressing ties everything together and adds a big punch of flavor. The meats, cheese, and sliced pepperoncini peppers all shine, but the dressing? It's the star!

Key Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Sub Rolls - My preferred bread choice for these sandwiches. You can also use hoagie rolls or any sturdy sandwich roll you love.
  • Sliced Pepperoncini Peppers - They bring the perfect tangy bite. If you can't find them, sliced banana peppers or an Italian Olive Salad Spread make good substitutes.
  • Provolone Cheese - Classic for Italian Sandwiches. Swiss or sliced mozzarella can also work.
  • Sliced Meats - Choose your favorites! I love a mix of salami, capicola, hot calabrese, hot coppa, pepperoni and ham. Aim for at least three types.
  • Creamy Dressing - This is non-negotiable. 😊 It pulls everything together and elevates the flavor in a big way.

This Italian Sandwich Recipe comes together in just minutes. Whether you're feeding a crowd or just making lunch, this one's always a hit!

STEP 1

Start by making the dressing. In a small bowl combine all of the dressing ingredients, stir well and set aside.

Slice your sub rolls lengthwise, without cutting all the way through. This helps hold all the delicious fillings inside. Place in the oven to toast.

STEP 3

Spread a generous amount of the creamy dressing on both sides of the bread. Don't skimp, this is where the magic starts!

STEP 4

On one half of the bread, layer the lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and peppers. On the other half, add the meats and cheese. The amounts are totally up to you!

STEP 5

Close the sandwich, press gently to secure the layers, and slice in half. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

💡Expert Tips

  • Grab a jar of Italian Seasoned Sliced Pepperoncini Peppers for the best flavor!
  • For meal prep, keep the dressing separate until just before eating to avoid soggy bread.
