Homemade Breadsticks

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

These Homemade Breadsticks are a game-changer! Brushed with a delicious garlic butter topping and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese, they pair perfectly with your favorite pasta, soups and salads. Plus, they freeze beautifully, making them a convenient addition to any homemade dinner.

I've been baking bread for years -from Sourdough Bread to Homemade Sandwich Bread, I love the process of turning simple ingredients into something warm and comforting. These Homemade Breadsticks have become a family favorite. I often double the batch and freeze half, so we always have fresh breadsticks on hand!

Easy Breadsticks Ingredients

  • Active Dry Yeast-Helps the dough rise and gives the breadsticks a light, airy texture.
  • Water & Milk-A mix of both adds moisture and richness to the dough.
  • Sugar-Feeds the yeast and enhances the flavor.
  • Salt- For flavor.
  • Olive Oil- For texture- Any neutral oil or butter can be used.
  • Bread Flour & All-Purpose Flour-The combination creates soft yet slightly chewy breadsticks.
  • Butter- To brush the breadsticks after they are baked.
  • Garlic Powder & Parsley- Mixed into the butter for a delicious topping.
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese- Sprinkled on top for extra yummy flavor!

How to Make Breadsticks

Use a stand mixer to make them even easier to make!

STEP 1

Combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and milk in the bowl of a stand mixer. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.

STEP 2

Add salt, olive oil and bread flour to the bowl. Mix on the lowest setting until fully combined. Slowly add in the remaining flour until the dough comes together. You may or may not need all of the flour.

STEP 3

Once all of the flour has been added, begin kneading the dough (using the dough hook attachment) for 8-10 minutes or until the dough passes the windowpane test.

STEP 4

Lightly coat the dough with oil, place a damp towel over the bowl and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

STEP 5

Divide into 12 equal pieces. Form each piece of dough into a ball then gently roll out into a 6" log. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let proof until puffy but not doubled.

STEP 6

Place in a 375° F oven and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until lightly browned and hollow sounding when tapped.

STEP 7

Brush with the garlic butter then sprinkle with grated parmesan. Enjoy!

Tips For Perfect Breadsticks

  • Don't add too much flour - Adding too much flour can make the dough dense. Gradually add flour until the dough is soft and slightly tacky but not sticky.
  • Knead thoroughly - Proper kneading develops the gluten for soft and chewy breadsticks.
  • Check for doneness - Tap the baked breadsticks; they should sound hollow when fully baked.

Storing & Freezing

Breadsticks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Freezing breadsticks will extend their shelf life. Freeze breadsticks on a lined baking sheet, not touching, then transfer to a freezer bag or container. Breadsticks can be kept in the freezer for 4-6 months.

Instructions

  • Combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and milk in the bowl of a stand mixer. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.

Place in the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until lightly browned and hollow sounding when tapped.
