I have mentioned before that I love baking bread. From Sourdough Bread to French Bread, and every bread in between, I love baking all types of bread. These soft, buttery breadsticks are a family favorite treat that I like to bake up whenever we are eating creamy pasta dishes like Chicken Alfredo. Having fresh bread with dinner is always a nice treat that we all love. I often bake double this recipe and freeze the remaining breadsticks to have for a later meal.

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this delicious recipe. Many of those ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. If you haven’t already checked out my post on Pantry Essentials, you should. I cover “essential” ingredients that are great to keep stocked in your pantry to make cooking food from scratch easy.

  • Water
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Olive Oil
  • Bread Flour
  • All- Purpose FLour
  • Butter
  • Garlic Powder

How To Make Breadsticks

Bloom Yeast – Combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and milk in the bowl of a stand mixer. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.

Mix Ingredients – Add the salt, olive oil and bread flour to the bowl. Mix on the lowest setting until fully combined. Slowly add in the remaining flour until the dough comes together. You may or may not need all of the flour.

Knead Dough – Once all of the flour has been added, begin kneading the dough (using the dough hook attachment) for 8-10 minutes or until the dough passes the windowpane test.

Ferment Dough (first rise) – Lightly coat the dough with oil, place a damp towel over the bowl and set in a warm place until doubled in size.

Shape Dough – Remove the dough from the bowl, weigh it with a scale, then divide into 12 equal pieces. Form each piece of dough into a ball then gently roll out into a 6″ log. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

Proof – Cover with a damp towel or plastic and let proof until doubled in size.

Bake – Place in a 375° F oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly browned and hollow sounding when tapped.

Top – Brush with the garlic butter if desired. Enjoy!

Tips

You should never add enough flour for the dough to become dry. Flour can hold moisture, and the air holds moisture. These two factors alone effect how much flour you will need to use in your dough. When adding the flour always add a little at a time and watch how the dough reacts after a little kneading. If the dough starts to fall from the dough hook and isn’t coming together, it is too wet. Add more flour. Knead a little more and check. When touched, the dough should feel soft and tacky, not sticky and wet.

Don’t rush the kneading process. Kneading develops the gluten which gives bread its shape and texture. You will know the bread is fully developed when it forms a ball and is very stretchy. The dough should not tear easily when stretched.

Storing and Freezing Breadsticks

Breadsticks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Freezing breadsticks will extend their shelf life. To freeze place on a lined baking sheet, not touching, and place in the freezer for several hours. Once frozen place in a freezer bag or container. Breadsticks can be frozen for 4-6 months.
