Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

An easy and flavorful Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe you can whip up in minutes. This simple recipe uses pantry staples and makes the perfect sweet and tangy sauce.

This has been my family's favorite homemade barbecue sauce for years. We love it slathered over country style ribs or served as a dipping sauce alongside crispy chicken tenders. Once you try it, you'll see why we keep a jar in the fridge all summer long.

As a recipe developer who loves creating approachable, from-scratch recipes for busy families, I'm all about simple, homemade sauces that elevate everyday meals. That is exactly what this easy homemade barbecue sauce is!

Key Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Ketchup - The base of the sauce. Use your favorite brand.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - Adds a nice tang. White vinegar can be substituted but I recommend apple cider vinegar for the flavor. Additional sugar may need to be added if using white vinegar.
  • Brown Sugar and Molasses - For the best flavor. Substitute with granulated if you do not have brown.

How To Make Homemade BBQ Sauce

This quick and easy homemade barbecue sauce comes together in just 30 minutes!

  1. Whisk together the ketchup, water, mustard, vinegar, sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, and all of the spices. Set aside
  2. In a small saucepan, sauté the onion and garlic for 1 minute.
  3. Add in the ketchup mixture and stir to combine. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Strain for a smooth sauce. Enjoy!

That is all it takes! It's ready to use or can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Variation

When I want a spicy BBQ Sauce, I stir in a little chipotle in adobo sauce.

This Homemade BBQ Sauce recipe has earned a permanent spot in my fridge. I hope it becomes a go-to for your family too!
