Since I always have more berries than we can eat when they’re ripe, I freeze a lot of them to enjoy in recipes like this cobbler and my go-to berry breakfast bars all year long. It’s simple, cozy, and one of those desserts that just feels like summer.
Key Ingredients & Substitutions
- Cornstarch – Helps thicken the berry filling so it’s not too runny.
- Granulated Sugar – Adds just the right amount of sweetness. If you’re using a lot of blackberries, you can increase the sugar to 1 cup since they tend to be tart.
- Fresh or Frozen Berries – I love using fresh berries when I have them, but frozen berries work wonderfully, too. No need to thaw them first!

💡Expert Tips
- If using strawberries, cut the larger ones into smaller pieces so they bake evenly.
- You can mix berries like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries for a great blend of flavors.
- If you’re using frozen fruit, just keep in mind that it can create a more liquidy filling. For the best results, try to use fewer strawberries than other berries, since they have a higher moisture content.
