I like to use my Homemade Pizza Sauce here because it comes together in under 5 minutes and freezes exceptionally well. And if you want to skip store-bought bread altogether, these are incredible made on my Homemade Bagels, specifically these Italian Herbs and Cheese Bagels!

How To Make Pizza Bagels

Here is a quick step-by-step overview of how to assemble and freeze your pizza bagels:

  1. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and place bagel halves side-by-side.
  1. Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce evenly over each bagel half.
  1. Sprinkle a generous layer of shredded mozzarella cheese over the pizza sauce on each bagel.
Placing pepperoni slices on top of cheese-covered pizza bagels.
  1. Place pepperoni slices over the cheese. Freeze for 2 hours until frozen solid. Once frozen, wrap each bagel individually in plastic wrap, transfer to a freezer bag.

See the recipe card below for the full recipe.

👉 Sky's Tips

  • Sauce & Cooking Tips: Be sure to use a thick pizza sauce rather than marinara, as marinara has a higher water content that can seep into the bread. Also, do not thaw the bagels before cooking/baking or air frying them straight from frozen keeps the bagel crust perfectly crisp!
  • Flash Freeze: Don't skip the 2-hour tray freeze! Flash-freezing the bagels individually keeps the cheese and toppings from sticking to the plastic wrap or clumping together in the freezer bag.
  • Light Oil Spray for the Air Fryer: You can place frozen bagels directly onto your air fryer basket without parchment paper. However, if your specific basket is prone to sticking, give it a light spray of cooking oil before adding the bagels.

How to Cook Pizza Bagels (Fresh or Frozen)

  • Oven (Fresh / Unfrozen): Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake freshly assembled bagels on a baking sheet for 20 minutes until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly.
  • Air Fryer (From Frozen): Place frozen pizza bagels in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Air fry at 350°F for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted, golden, and bubbling, and the center is piping hot.
  • Oven (From Frozen): Preheat oven to 350°F. Place frozen bagels on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until heated through and the cheese is fully melted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these pizza bagels with mini bagels?

Yes! Mini bagels work great for smaller snacks. Just adjust the oven or air fryer cooking time down by 1 to 2 minutes so they don't over-brown.

Do I need to thaw pizza bagels before cooking?

No, you do not need to thaw them! Cooking them straight from frozen keeps the bagel crisp and prevents the bread from getting soggy as it warms up.

How long do homemade pizza bagels last in the freezer?

When wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored inside a heavy-duty freezer bag, they stay fresh for up to 6 months.

I hope you give these Easy Homemade Pizza Bagels a try soon. They are simple, cost-effective, and guaranteed to be a hit with kids and adults alike!

Ingredients

  • 6 plain bagels
  • 1 cup pizza sauce * see note
  • 3 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 36 pepperonis or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese grated
I always use Kosher salt in my kitchen! If using table salt, start with half the amount and adjust to taste, as it is much "saltier" by volume.

Instructions

  • Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Separate the 6 bagels into halves and place them cut-side up on the lined sheets.
  • Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over each bagel half. Top evenly with shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperonis, grated parmesan cheese, and your choice of additional toppings.
  • Flash Freeze: Place the baking sheets flat in the freezer for about 2 hours until the bagels are completely frozen solid. Once frozen, wrap each pizza bagel individually in plastic wrap, then place them together in a gallon-sized freezer storage bag. Store in the freezer for up to 6 months.
  • Frozen Oven Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place frozen bagels on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until hot and the cheese is melted.
  • Baking after freshly made: Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake freshly assembled bagels on a baking sheet for 20 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  • Frozen Air Fryer Instructions: Place frozen pizza bagels directly into the air fryer basket (lightly spray basket with oil if prone to sticking). Air fry at 350°F for 5 minutes.
