Spicy Teriyaki Chicken Wings

Chicken wings the easy way with a delicious Asian inspired spicy teriyaki sauce that will become your new favorite chicken wing sauce.

Chicken wings are really easy to make at home without a deep fryer. These Spicy Teriyaki Chicken Wings are my favorite. I like to call spicy teriyaki sauce “Spicyaki”. This delicious sauce is made by combining teriyaki sauce with spicy sauce. This combination creates one of my favorite sauces for Asian inspired dishes.

Typically, chicken wings are deep fried. While deep frying them creates a delicious wing, you can create an equally delicious chicken wing in the oven. This allows you to skip standing in front of a deep fryer. Which I really do not like. I prefer the oven method over deep frying.

Trust me, cooking them in the oven, when done right, does not take away from the texture of the chicken wings. Which is something I was worried about when I tried this method of cooking chicken wings for the first time.

To achieve the best texture, you will need to steam the chicken wings first. This allows the fat to render out from the chicken before you roast them in the oven, which crisps up the skin. Do not skip steaming them, this step is very important.

I use a steamer basket that is placed on top of a pot. Which means I have to steam in batches, but it is worth it in the end. After steaming the wings, they need to be cooled for at least an hour.

How to Cook Chicken Wings in the Oven

Steam

Using a steamer basket and pot with a lid, bring 1 inch of water to a simmer. Fill up the steamer basket with the chicken wings and place over the pot. Put the lid on and steam for 10 minutes. You may need to steam in batches if all of the wings do not fit in the basket.

After 10 minutes remove the wings from the steamer and place on a cooling rack. Pat the wings with a paper towel to dry them completely. Place the rack over a sheet tray lined with parchment paper.

Chill

Place the chicken wings in the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour.

Roast

After the wings have cooled place them in a 425° F oven. Roast the chicken wings for 20 minutes, rotate the wings and roast for another 20 minutes or until crispy.

Making the “Spicyaki” Sauce (Spicy Teriyaki)

Before starting the wings, maybe even the night before, make both of the sauces.

A few minutes before the wings are done start the spicyaki sauce.

In a small sauce pan over medium low heat add 3/4 cup of teriyaki sauce and 2 tablespoons of the spicy sauce. For a spicier sauce add more of the spicy sauce, starting with 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach the desired spice level. Mix well to combine. Heat the sauce just long enough to combine the two sauces and heat them up.

Once the wings are done, place them in a large bowl along with the sauce and toss until coated evenly. Enjoy!
