Southern Tuna Salad

The perfect Southern Tuna Salad

Southern Tuna Salad is the best way to eat canned tuna. Tuna salad makes a great quick lunch any day of the week and is ready in under 30 minutes. This is my go-to tuna salad recipe, perfect every time. Albacore tuna mixed with dill pickles, onions, boiled eggs and mayonnaise; it doesn’t get better than this!

Southern Tuna Salad

Growing up, tuna salad sandwiches were a staple in our house, and at grandma’s house. Man, those were some good sandwiches. I love the pickles, has to be dill, in this salad. The vinegar and dill really help brighten up the whole dish and add a crunchy texture. My favorite part of this recipe is the onion in it. The flavor of the onions really makes this dish. Sometimes I find myself adding more onion to it as I am making it just because I love the flavor.

Tuna salad is great for meal prep and kid’s lunchboxes. I like to pack some in an airtight container and put some crackers on the side for my kiddos school lunches. Tuna salad is packed full of nutritious protein that gets them through the day.

Ingredients Needed

Canned Tuna-I prefer tuna packed in water, not oil. I always buy Albacore, it’s worth it in terms of flavor.

Diced Onion-Fresh diced yellow or white onion is a must have ingredient for a good tuna salad.

Dill Pickles-I am sure you can use other pickles, but the Dill really works well.

Eggs-Hard boiled eggs add more protein to dish.

Mayo-I really like Dukes Mayo, but any kind will work.

Salt and Pepper-to taste.

How to serve tuna salad

  • Serve tuna salad on bread for a delicious sandwich.
  • Make it a bit healthier by serving it on a lettuce wrap.
  • Crackers are always good with tuna salad. The go-to way to eat tuna salad at my house!
  • Mix it into a salad with tomatoes and cucumbers.
  • Tuna wraps (flour tortilla) with lettuce and tomato are also great way to eat tuna salad.
  • Serve on toast triangles for parties.

How to Store Southern Tuna Salad

Store tuna salad in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 7 days. Mix well before serving.

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl add the drained tuna.  Using a fork, break up the tuna to smaller pieces.

Add in the remaining ingredients and mix well.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Enjoy!

Note

To make perfect boiled eggs every time start with adding your eggs to a small pot, cover with cold water.  The water should be at least an inch over the top of the eggs.

Place the pot over high heat and bring to a boil.  Once the water begins to boil cover the pot and pull it off the heat.

Set a timer for 12 minutes.  Once the 12 minutes are up, drain off the water and cover the eggs with ice and cold water.  This will stop the cooking.  After 5 to 10 minutes, you can peel the eggs.
