Soft, fluffy, and made with simple ingredients, these homemade Buttermilk Waffles are the ultimate breakfast treat!

There’s just something special about starting the morning with a stack of warm waffles, fresh off the waffle iron. Saturday mornings are always better when Buttermilk Waffles are on the menu, at least, that’s what my kiddos say!

These waffles are crisp on the outside, light and airy on the inside, and packed with that classic buttermilk flavor. They’re nothing like the boxed mixes; homemade waffles have a richer taste and a perfect texture that can’t be beat. Plus, they come together quickly with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

These waffles are perfect for a cozy weekend breakfast, but they’re also great for meal prep. I like to make a double batch when I make these and freeze the extras for busy mornings. They reheat beautifully, making them a quick and easy breakfast option. And if you’re feeling extra indulgent, try pairing them with crispy fried buttermilk chicken for the ultimate Chicken and Waffles dish!

Buttermilk Waffle Ingredients

I love making recipes like this one that uses just a few basic pantry staples. Making these delicious Buttermilk Waffles only requires 8 or 9 (you’ll see why) simple ingredients.

  • Flour – Basic all-purpose flour is needed for this recipe. Sifting the flour with the other dry ingredients ensure there are no clumps that might not get mixed in.
  • Baking Powder – The only leavener needed to make these waffles rise to fluffy goodness.
  • Sugar– Plain white granulated sugar for just a touch of sweetness. Honey or maple syrup can be used in place of the granulated sugar.
  • Salt – I like using kosher salt to enhance the overall flavor of the waffles.
  • Buttermilk – For moisture and flavor! Room temperature or slightly warmed for the best incorporation. Buttermilk Powder is also a great way to add buttermilk flavor without having to buy buttermilk whenever a recipe calls for it. Add the powder directly to the dry ingredients and follow along with the recipe.
  • Eggs – Eggs help to bring the batter and also add protein and moisture to the waffles. Room temperature work best.
  • Butter – Melted and slightly cooled for the best incorporation. Butter adds flavor! It also helps with the soft texture.
  • Vanilla Extract– For flavor!

How To Make Waffles

This is a no fuss recipe that comes together in minutes. Simply mix together the ingredients and get to cooking them.

  • Preheat the waffle iron – You want the waffle iron to be hot before pouring the batter in. Follow your waffle iron’s directions before cooking in it.
  • Mix together the dry ingredients – In a large bowl sift or whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and buttermilk powder (if using).
  • Mix together the wet ingredients – In a separate bowl combine the buttermilk (or milk if using buttermilk powder), eggs and vanilla extract. Whisk until fully combined. Pour in the butter and mix well.
  • Make the batter – Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix just until fully combined and no large clumps are present. Try not to overmix the batter, this will cause the waffles to be tough instead of soft and fluffy.
  • Cook the waffles – Lightly coat the waffle iron with oil (or butter) by brushing it on or using a spray. Pour in 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of batter into the oiled waffle iron. Close the iron and follow the cooking directions listed in your waffle iron’s manual. For my iron I cook the waffles for about 3 minutes. For crispier waffles add more time. Continue with the remaining batter. Enjoy!

No Buttermilk, No Problem!

If you’re like me and rarely have buttermilk on hand, buttermilk powder is a game-changer! It’s a pantry staple in my kitchen because it gives you that signature tangy flavor without needing fresh buttermilk. Just mix it with the dry ingredients and follow the recipe as usual. No buttermilk or powder? No problem! A simple substitute of milk with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice works just as well.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these delicious waffles with your favorite toppings, syrups or plain. Here are a few suggestions that my family loves.

We love serving waffles with just some softened butter and maple syrup. This is typically how we serve them in our house. We also love adding fresh bananas to them as well as toasted nuts like pecans and walnuts. When using toasted nuts, you can also add them to the batter.

Fresh berries are always a treat. Whenever we have them in the house, we love using them to top our waffles. Occasionally I will make a fresh berry compote to top the waffles. That is always a delicious addition and doesn’t require and syrup.

Peanut butter is another kid favorite! Warm waffles smeared with peanut butter and topped with syrup is always a hit with the kiddos. Extra protein from the peanut butter is a bonus!

Freezing Waffles

Once the waffles have cooled completely you can either individually wrap them and place them in a freezer bag or container. Or you can lay them in a single layer on a parchment lined pan and freeze them. After a few hours remove them from the pan and place them in a freezer bag or container.

Waffles can be stored in the freezer for several months.

To reheat the waffles, thaw completely them warm in the oven, microwave or toaster oven.
