Key Ingredients & Variations

A few key ingredients make all the difference when it comes to achieving that perfect soft and chewy texture.

  • Unsalted Butter - Softened butter is essential for the creaming process, which helps create a tender, chewy texture.
  • 1 Whole Egg + 1 Egg Yolk - This combination adds richness and chewiness to the cookies.
  • Vanilla & Almond Extract - The blend of these two extracts enhances the flavor beautifully.
  • Variations - Mix in your favorite sprinkles, chopped candy bars, or nuts for a fun twist!

How To Make Soft & Chewy Sugar Cookies

You won't believe how easy these cookies are to make! Just a few simple steps and you'll have bakery-worthy cookies in no time.

STEP 1

In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Beat until well combined.

STEP 2

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

STEP 3

Use a 1-ounce cookie scoop (or 2 heaping tablespoons) to scoop the cookie dough, then roll each piece into a ball and coat the tops in the remaining 3 tablespoons of sugar. Arrange the cookies on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart. Bake for 9-10 minutes. Enjoy!

💡Expert Tips

  • Measure Your Flour Correctly - Too much flour can make cookies dry. Spoon and level the flour instead of scooping directly from the bag.
  • Don't Overbake - The cookies should look slightly underdone in the center when you take them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these cookies ahead of time?

Absolutely! The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.

Can I use salted butter in this recipe?

I recommend using unsalted butter to give you more control over the amount of salt in the recipe. If you prefer to use salted butter, simply omit the salt called for in the recipe.
