Pizza! We make a lot of pizza in the Pilgreen household. Through the years we have played with many topping combinations, some have become staples, like this Pepperoni Alfredo Pizza, and some are on repeat quite often. This combination of toppings is certainly my go to, when I have Italian Sausage. Both spicy and sweet Italian Sausage work great for this pizza. I typically use whatever I have on hand. The briny green olives add FANTASTIC flavor to pizza, I add them to so many different pizzas. They are one of my favorite pizza toppings. And fresh basil from the garden during the warmer months.

How to Make Spicy Sausage and Olive Pizza
Pizza Dough: First make the pizza dough using your favorite pizza dough recipe or try my favorite pizza dough recipe.
Pizza Sauce: While the dough is proofing whip together this super easy, no cooking necessary, pizza sauce from scratch. This sauce has been a favorite of mine for years now. I usually make the full batch, use what I need, portion and freeze the rest.
Cook Sausage: In a pan over medium heat, cook the sausage, crumbling it as it cooks. Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel lined plate until needed.
Slice Peppers and Olives: You can use either fresh banana peppers (what I used in this recipe) and thinly slice them along with the olives or use pre-sliced and pickled banana peppers. Both are fantastic on pizzas!
Assemble Pizza: Roll out the dough to roughly 15″. Spread your desired amount of pizza sauce over the dough. Top with mozzarella cheese, meat, peppers and olives. Sprinkle over the remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
Bake: Place in a 450° F oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.
Cool: Cool for 5-10 minutes before topping with fresh basil and slicing. Enjoy!
Tips:
- For a thicker crust, roll the dough out, assemble the pizza and let it rest in a warm place for 30 minutes before baking.
- For a spicier pizza add some red pepper flakes to the sausage while cooking it.
Use Other Peppers
If you don’t have banana peppers or don’t care for banana peppers, try using some of these other peppers.
Bell Peppers – Diced bell peppers of any color are always a great topping for pizza.
Jalapeño Peppers – Fresh or pickled jalapeños make a fantastic pizza topping. Especially if you really want to amp up the spice level.
Pepperoncinis – Fresh or pickled pepperoncinis (like the ones you get in some delivery pizza boxes) are great when cooked on pizzas.
