With so many delicious ways to prepare the humble potato, baked potatoes are at the top of the list for me. This post will cover How to Bake a Potato in the Oven to get the best results.
I know, I know you are probably thinking isn’t it just as simple as tossing a potato in the oven and baking it? Sure, you can just bake a potato and it turn out good. However, if you want a great baked potato, I have a few tricks I have learned through the years that make the BEST baked potato.
There are 2 ways that you will typically see baked potatoes prepared. The first is wrapped in foil. The second is not wrapped. The major difference in the two is that a potato wrapped in foil is steamed. A potato that is not wrapped in foil becomes a beautifully baked potato. You will certainly notice the difference if you compare the two side by side.
The steamed potato will have a lot more moisture and a denser texture, while the unwrapped potato will have a drier and fluffier texture. Which is what you want when making a baked potato. Baking a potato without foil just produces a better overall texture and flavor.
Now for the skin. I have always, since I was a kid, loved eating potato skins. Now that I am an adult, I have learned that the skin of a baked potato must ALWAYS be oiled and salted. The oil helps to crisp up the skin as well as hold the salt on. Trust me friends, this is the best way to prepare baked potatoes. There are no potato skins going uneaten in my household.

How Can You Tell When a Baked Potato is Done?
After 45-50 minutes you can check if the potato is done by gently squeezing the potato. If the potato is soft, it is done. If it is hard to squeeze, continue baking. The bigger the potato, the longer it will take to bake.
