What Are Tostadas Made Of?
Tostadas are very similar to tacos, with the main difference being a flat crispy tortilla as the base. Your typical tostadas are constructed as follows: Crispy tortilla base, refried beans, seasoned meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and salsa.
Variations and Toppings
- Use shredded chicken instead of beef.
- No meat, just beans and your choice of toppings.
- Use pickled red or white onions as a topping.
- Change up the cheese, use cotija, cheddar or pepperjack.
- Pickled or fresh jalapeños are a great topping.
- Sour cream is a great topping.
- Guacamole is a great topping.
- Pico De Gallo is a great topping.
- Use mashed black beans instead of the refried beans.
- A drizzle of Mexican Table Cream!
How to Make Easy Beef Tostadas
Fry the Tortillas
Start by heating 1/2″ of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium- high heat. Fry each corn tortilla for approximately 1 minute, flip and fry for an additional 30 – 45 seconds. The tortillas should be crisp and slightly darker in color. Place on a wire rack or paper towels to drain and cool. Continue until all of the tortillas are cooked.
Cook the Meat
In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Crumbling as it cooks. When the beef is halfway through cooking add in the diced onions and continue cooking until fully cooked.
Drain the meat, return it to the skillet and stir in the seasonings. You may need a tablespoon of water or two to help the seasonings fully incorporate.
Toppings
Gather all of your topping and start to assemble the tostadas. Spread your desired amount of refried beans on the tostada, top with the meat and other toppings. Enjoy!
