If you are like me and you hardly ever have buttermilk in your pantry, I highly recommend buying buttermilk powder. Buttermilk powder has become a staple ingredient in my kitchen. I have been loving using it to replace buttermilk in recipes. I just add it straight to the dry ingredients and follow along with the recipe. It gives you that tangy flavor you get from buttermilk without having to buy it whenever you need it for a recipe. If you do not have buttermilk, you can add a little vinegar or lemon juice to your milk before adding it to the dry ingredients.

These waffles are perfect for quick breakfasts and savory dishes like this popular Chicken and Waffles recipe. We love serving them with butter, maple syrup and lots of fresh berries. They also freeze very well. I like to make a double batch whenever I make these. With the leftovers I wrap individually and place in a freezer bag and keep in the freezer. I love making recipes like this one that uses just a few basic pantry staples. Making these delicious Buttermilk Waffles only requires 8 or 9 (you'll see why) simple ingredients.

This is a no fuss recipe that comes together in minutes. Simply mix together the ingredients and get to cooking them.

Serve these delicious waffles with your favorite toppings, syrups or plain. Here are a few suggestions that my family loves.

We love serving waffles with just some softened butter and maple syrup. This is typically how we serve them in our house. We also love adding fresh bananas to them as well as toasted nuts like pecans and walnuts. When using toasted nuts, you can also add them to the batter.

Fresh berries are always a treat. Whenever we have them in the house, we love using them to top our waffles. Occasionally I will make a fresh berry compote to top the waffles. That is always a delicious addition and doesn't require and syrup.

Peanut butter is another kid favorite! Warm waffles smeared with peanut butter and topped with syrup is always a hit with the kiddos. Extra protein from the peanut butter is a bonus!

You just about add anything to waffles batter. Bacon, cheese and green onions are all delicious additions that make great savory waffles.

Once the waffles have cooled completely you can either individually wrap them and place them in a freezer bag or container. Or you can lay them in a single layer on a parchment lined pan and freeze them. After a few hours remove them from the pan and place them in a freezer bag or container.

Waffles can be stored in the freezer for several months.

To reheat the waffles, thaw completely them warm in the oven, microwave or toaster oven.

Ingredients
  • 3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 5 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 3/4 Teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 Large eggs (room temperature)
  • 3/4 Cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Melt the butter and set it aside to cool while you prepare the rest of the recipe.

  2. Following your manufacturer's manual, preheat your waffle iron.

  3. In a large bowl sift or whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and buttermilk powder (if using).

  4. In a separate bowl combine the buttermilk (or milk if using buttermilk powder), eggs and vanilla extract. Whisk until fully combined. Pour in the butter and mix well.

  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix just until fully combined and no large clumps are present. Try not to overmix the batter, this will cause the waffles to be tough instead of soft and fluffy.

  6. Lightly coat the waffle iron with oil or butter.  Pour 1/2-3/4 cup of batter into the waffle iron.  Close the iron and cook according to your manufacturer's directions.  I typically cook mine for 3-4 minutes.

  7. Continue until all of the batter has been used.  Serve with your favorite toppings.  Enjoy!
