Description

This simple and straightforward Soft Sandwich Bread recipe delivers a perfect loaf every time. Let me walk you through the steps to making homemade sandwich bread that’s soft, fluffy, and absolutely delicious!

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons butter (cut into small pieces)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3-4 cups bread flour
Instructions
  1. In a pot over medium-low heat or a microwave-safe bowl, warm the water, milk, and butter until the butter is just melted. Be careful not to exceed 110°F. Pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer.

  2. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit until foamy. About 5 minutes. Once activated, add the egg, honey, salt and half of the flour, mixing until fully combined.

  3. Gradually add more flour, 1/4 cup at a time until the dough becomes tacky but not sticky. It usually takes 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups for me but can take the full 4 cups.

  4. Knead the dough thoroughly until it becomes smooth and elastic, passing the windowpane test. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

  5. Once the dough has proofed, transfer the dough to a lightly oiled work surface and gently press it into an 8x13 rectangle. Roll it up tightly and place it into a lightly greased 9x5 loaf pan.

  6. Cover and let it rise until puffy and about 1 inch above the top of the pan, which should take around 30 minutes to 1 hour.

  7. Move the rack to the lowest position and preheat the oven to 350°F.

  8. Once the dough is ready, place in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely before slicing. Enjoy!
