I make a lot of overnight oats. We almost always have them in the refrigerator. Keeping healthy breakfast options available for everyone in the house is something I like to do. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Coming up with different flavors for Overnight Oats is always fun. I love that Overnight Oats are so easy to make, so making a few different flavors at one time is not hard. By doing this I am able to keep everyone's favorite flavor in the refrigerator.
I have been using this base recipe for making Overnight Oats for several years. The results are always great. I am sharing the basic recipe that I use for Overnight Oats along with a few different flavor combinations that I like.
Old Fashioned Oats- I find that Old Fashioned Oats have a better texture in this recipe. You can use steel cut or instant but the texture will be different.
Yogurt- ANY kind of yogurt can be used when making Overnight Oats. Just keep in mind the sweetness and flavor of the yogurt will affect the entire dish.
Almond Milk- or any milk, even water will work.
Extracts can be used to flavor the Overnight Oats
Spices like cinnamon can be used.
Chia Seeds offer nutrients like fiber and Omega 3s. They also help to thicken the Overnight Oats.
Sweeteners like honey or maple syrup
Nuts
Fruit
Nut Butters are great for additional protein and flavor
Overnight Oats are great eaten cold or warmed up.
How long do they last?
You can keep Overnight Oats in the refrigerator for about 4 days.
Do Overnight Oats have to be made the night before?
Yes, and no. You have to give the oats time to soak up the moisture from the milk and yogurt to soften them. That is why they are typically made the night before so that they are ready for breakfast in the morning. You can make them in the morning and check on the texture of the oats after about 6 hours.
Here are a few of my other Overnight Oats recipes in case you missed them.
