Hamburger Steak

Hamburger Steak

Growing up, my father made Hamburger Steak often. My siblings and I absolutely loved it. Seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich brown gravy along with a heaping pile of mashed potatoes. A comforting home cooked meal that never disappoints. Now my kids absolutely love it. When my oldest got home from school yesterday and saw that we were having Hamburger Steak, he let out a big "Yes" and a happy dance!

Hamburger Steak makes a hearty and delicious weeknight meal. You probably keep all of the ingredients to make this meal on hand. I love keeping a stocked pantry so that I can make quick and easy meals like this. It is super easy to put together and cooks rather quickly. You can have Hamburger Steak with the gravy on the table in under 1 hour. Which is great for busy weeknights when you need to have dinner ready quickly. If you do have time, double the recipe and freeze some for later. This is an easy way to stock your freezer with food for later on.

Ground Beef

Bread Crumbs- dried or fresh

Eggs

Seasonings- salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, dried oregano, Worcestershire sauce

Mustard- prepared or dried

Beef Stock- good quality for the best flavor

Mushrooms

Onions

Fresh Garlic

Butter

Flour

After getting the meat mixture together, shape the patties and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. You do not want them touching. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for several hours. Once they are frozen, remove from the baking sheet and place in a freezer bag or container. Freeze for up to 4 months.

Frozen Hamburger Steak

When you are ready to cook them, pull them out of the freezer the night before and allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Then continue on with the recipe.

Description

Delicious ground beef patties seared and smothered in a rich, mushroom, onion brown gravy.  This hearty entree pairs perfectly with a side of super creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients
    Hamburger Steak patties
  • 1.75 (28 ounces) lb ground beef
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 2.5 tsp salt
  • 1/2-1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 3 oz bread crumbs
  • Mushroom Onion Brown Gravy
  • 6-8 Medium mushrooms (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Medium onion (halved, sliced 1'4" thick)
  • 4 clove garlic (minced)
  • 2 oz butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 5 cup beef stock
  • To Taste salt
  • To Taste pepper
Instructions
  1. Hamburger Steak patties

In a large bowl, using your hands, mix all of the hamburger steak ingredients together.  Mix well.

  2. Separate the meat mixture into patties, 4.5-5 ounces each.  Press them out evenly and press your thumb into the middle to make an indent.  This will help the middle cook evenly.

Place a large skillet or pan over medium-high heat.  Once the pan is hot add in the patties.  Let the patties cook for approximately 5 minutes on each side.  You are looking for them to brown nicely but not be cooked through.

Remove them from the pan and set aside.

  3. For the gravy

In the same pan, turn the heat down to medium low, add in the onions and mushrooms.  Sauté for approximately 10 minutes.  Or until the onions and mushrooms have browned lightly and are soft.  Add in the butter and garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  4. Add in the flour, mixing to make your roux.  Depending on the amount of grease that was produced from your meat, you may need more flour.  Cook for 1 minute.

  5. Slowly add in your stock, whisking as you are adding in the liquid.  Be sure to get all of the bits of roux off the bottom of your pan as you are whisking.  Add the patties to the pan and bring to a simmer.  Allow to simmer for 20 minutes.  Turing the patties halfway through the cooking time.  The sauce will continue to thicken as it cooks.  Be sure to mix it periodically to ensure nothing sticks to the bottom.

  6. Salt and pepper the sauce as needed.  Enjoy!
